There’s a quiet joy in the soft flicker of a candle, transforming moments into something special. At Golly Gosh Candles, we want you to enjoy every burn as beautifully as the first. With a little care and attention, your candle can continue to fill your home with warmth and elegance.
Here are our simple tips for the perfect burn:
The First Burn Is Everything
When lighting your candle for the first time, let it burn long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the surface. This helps create an even wax pool and prevents tunneling, so every moment with your candle is just as perfect as the last.
For the wax to melt evenly across the surface and avoid tunneling, you need to burn the candle for a sufficient amount of time during each session, usually 1-2 hours, or until the melt pool reaches the edges of the container. If you extinguish it too soon, the wax may not melt fully, and a “memory ring” will form, causing uneven burns in the future.
Once a memory ring is created, it can be very hard to correct, even if you burn the candle for longer sessions afterward. That’s why the first burn is critical to establish an even melt pool.
Trim the Wick for a Gentle Glow
A short wick helps your candle burn cleanly. Before lighting, trim the wick to around 5mm to reduce flickering and prevent any soot from forming. It’s a small step that makes all the difference.
This simple act also ensures the flame stays steady and well-proportioned, allowing the scent to diffuse beautifully throughout the room. For precision, we recommend using a wick trimmer, an essential tool for any candle lover, but if you don't have one of these yet, a pair of sharp scissors will do. Cut at a downwards angle to create a pointed wick.
Find the Perfect Spot
Candles love calm, draft-free spaces. Placing your candle in a stable area away from windows, fans, or air vents ensures the flame burns steadily, creating a consistent wax pool and even scent throw.
Position your candle on a heat-safe surface, away from flammable materials, to keep your space both serene and safe. A beautifully styled corner or a centrepiece display works wonderfully to make your candle the focal point of the room.
Keep Burns Short and Sweet
For the best results, limit each burn to 3-4 hours. Overburning can affect the fragrance and leave the glass too warm to handle. By keeping burns shorter, your candle will reward you with more hours of indulgent glow.
Limiting burns to 3-4 hours is widely recommended for the following reasons:
1. Prevent Overheating: Burning a candle for too long can cause the glass container to become overly hot, which could weaken or crack it.
2. Preserve Fragrance: Overburning may cause the wax to heat unevenly, potentially dulling or distorting the fragrance.
3. Maintain an Even Wax Pool: Shorter burns help the wax melt evenly across the surface, ensuring you get the most out of your candle without creating excess wax buildup on the sides.
4. Prevent Wick “Mushrooming”: Long burns can cause the wick to develop a large carbon deposit at the tip, leading to soot or an unstable flame.
Extinguish with Care
Blowing out your candle may seem like the easiest way to extinguish it, but it can disturb the wax and release smoke. Instead, use a snuffer to gently put out the flame.
A snuffer helps maintain the smooth finish of the wax and eliminates the possibility of scattered debris, ensuring your candle is ready for its next burn. For an added touch of elegance, a beautifully designed snuffer can become a part of your candle care ritual.
A Clean Wax Pool, Every Time
Before relighting your candle, check that the wax pool is free of debris. Removing any wick trimmings or dust helps preserve the purity of your candle’s fragrance and burn.
